Take Home Essay Exam Instructions (100 Points)

In at least three full pages, you will answer one of the following questions.  The essay should be in Times New Roman, 12 point font, and be double spaced. It should be sent to me in a Word document.  To answer a question, you can use the textbook, the recorded Zoom video lectures, the course readings posted on Canvas, and the introductory module videos on Canvas.  In your essay response, you need to answer the essay prompts. You also need to give and explain concrete examples in your essay. You should answer the essay question as completely as possible. In addition to content, the essay will be graded on writing, spelling, and grammar.  The essay should be written in paragraph form and in complete sentences.

The essay should be written in your own words.  It should not be copied word for word from online sources.  If you do this, it is plagiarism and the penalty will be a zero on the exam.  Your work must be your own.  Students are prohibited from helping each other on the exam.  Students turning in identical essays will receive a zero on the exam.

The essay should be uploaded on Canvas under “Assignments” and “Second Exam.”  It is due by Sunday November 7th at 11:59 PM.

 

  1. Discuss the Progressive Era. What were some characteristics of the typical Progressive? Who were some of the prominent Progressives? What role did the muckrakers play in promoting reforms during the Progressive Era? How did Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson promote Progress policies?  What are some examples of domestic successes and failures of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson?  Did the Progressives have a positive or negative impact on American society?

  1. Discuss the Great Depression.  What were some of the causes of the Great Depression?  How did Presidents Herbert Hoover and Franklin D. Roosevelt respond to the Great Depression?  What were the goals of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal and what are some examples of New Deal programs? How effective was the New Deal in alleviating the effects of the Great Depression?  How did the Great Depression change the political landscape?

 

  1. Discuss U.S. policies before and during World War Two. How did Americans react to events in Europe and Asia?  What were the arguments for and against U.S. intervention in World War Two?  What were the major turning points of World War Two?  What effects did World War Two have on the home front? How did the war impact America’s status as a world power?
