Developmental stages are defined by changes that begin within. Sheehy acknowledges that our lives are influenced by many factors:

  • Marker eventsconcrete happenings: marriages, graduations, divorces, deaths

    • External aspectssocial class, roles, culture we live in, our jobs and family

    • Internal forces: these are the most important to her:

      • Values, goals aspirations, aspects of our personality, talents and capabilities

      • Are they being expressed?  Very much at the feeling level  (very much a womans movement kind of orientationCrowley)

Ask yourself  have your changes been caused by internal or external factors ?

The inner realm is where the crucial shifts in the bedrock occurthey throw us off balanceand bring us into a passage.  As we move through a passage, some magic must be given up, some cherished illusion of safety and a comfortably familiar sense of self must be cast off in order to allow for growth.

Changes are not only predictable, but desirablethey mean growth.  Read : Trapeze analogy.

Daniel Levinson:

Social psychologist from Yale. Famous study of 40 men. We develop through predictable periods. We work on developmental tasks, and build a new life structure around them.

Roger Gould:

UCLA Psychiatrist. Studied 125 people over a five year period. Also developed a stage theory

Think about an earlier period in your life (perhaps 5, 10, of 15 years ago) and then describe that time considering events or issues related to your professional, educational, and/or personal life.

Then think about your current situation. (You might want to go back and look at what you said in your posting to the Water Cooler.) Note any significant similarities or differences between these two times. Does either of your two life periods correspond with the stages that Sheehy describes. Not everyone’s life matches the Sheehy model or the article, so feel free to focus your response on how you differ from what Sheehy or the article proposes.

Also, please feel free to always weave in comments and sentiments pertaining to how issues relating to our current state of affairs (COVID, racial inequities, civil unrest and political divisiveness) might apply to our discussion topics. This is not required and might not be applicable to every topic.

MUST start using quotes from the workbook in all of your responses whether they be in your initial answer to the discussion topic AS WELL AS TO YOUR CLASSMATES.  Make sure you include quotes in all of your responses from this week’s reading material to support your perspective.

Without substantive quotes you do not get credit for your response.  YOU MUST REPLY TO AT LEAST 2 CLASS MATES FOR EVERY DICUSSION BOARD SUBMISSION OR YOU WILL RECIEVE A ZERO, EVEN FOR YOUR ORIGINAL DICUSSION BOARD ASNWER. When replying to at least two classmates for each dicussion board post if you don’t insert an exact quote you must at least mention a theory or theorist and reference our materials in some fashion.
