09 Nov discussing particular areas in which you think institutional racism does or does not exist
- In Michael Omi’s essay “In Living Color” (462), he writes about the ways race has been presented historically in our culture, and argues that “Race itself is a slippery social concept which is paradoxically both ‘obvious’ and ‘invisible.'” In our own culture in the past several months, we’ve heard and read a lot about “institutional racism,” which is a form of racism that is “invisible” in that it is built into the norms of the culture. Explain the reasons you think that institutional racism does or does not exist in the U.S. today, giving evidence and explaining how the evidence supports your view. Institutional racism has been discussed in such areas as hiring, college opportunities, police treatment of minorities, and the mortgage industry. Please be specific in discussing particular areas in which you think institutional racism does or does not exist. If you do any outside research to support your view, you must use both in-text documentation and works cited page that reflects all the works you have used in your essay.
