Space and race are important themes in Richard Wright’s 1937 autobiographical sketch, “The Ethics of Living Jim Crow,” and William Henry Lewis’ 2005 story, “I Got Somebody in Staunton.” In Wright’s work, violence and white supremacy prohibit free and equal access to workplaces, neighborhoods, and public space.
