Choose a news or lifestyle/entertainment article to analyze using discourse. Your chosen article could be from a news source (print or online) or a magazine (print or online). It may include images alongside text, but this is not a requirement. You must include a copy of the article in your paper. Your essay should address the following questions: What is discourse and what theoretical tradition does it develop from? Why is discourse important for media studies? What is the discourse(s) being produced and circulated in the article? What types of knowledge(s) is the discourse(s) producing in the article? What is the regime of truth being constructed through this article? (This is arguable the most important question, so be sure to address it comprehensively!) By answering these questions, you will be engaging in a discourse analysis of your chosen article. Please be thorough, and anchor your answers to the above questions with specific reference to details in the article. If your chosen article includes an image alongside the text, remember to consider how the image may also function as discourse in conjunction with the text. As always, the essay should be well-organized, with excellent grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Please copy-edit your work. All references should be properly cited using Chicago author-date style.
