Module 1: Short Take-Home Essay The final assignment of this module is a take-home essay on the question: How do anthropologists make the strange familiar and the familiar strange? The essay is an opportunity for you to review the module and, most importantly, articulate in your own words your understanding of the core concepts covered in the module. Your essay should provide relevant examples from the readings/ listenings/viewings and experiential assignments. It is also critical that the first time you refer to a concept that we have covered in the module that you define it. PARAMETERS • The essay is formal. Please ensure that you check your grammar and spelling before you submit the essay. • You should begin with a thesis statement that restates the question and provides a general answer to the question referring to the key concepts we have discussed in the module.(1-2 paragraphs) • Then you need to provide a road map to the reader on how you plan to answer the question. For example: ‘In this essay, I will begin by discussing X and then I will discuss X and then I will provide a conclusion.’ (1-2 paragraphs) • You will then follow your road map and provide a detailed answer with examples from the course(readings/listenings/viewings/experiential learning activities) accompanied by critical analysis and reference to concepts which support your answer.(3-5 pages) • Your examples and analysis will be followed by a conclusion. Here, you should answer the main question in precise terms and provide any critical reflection on the question or one or two critical questions you feel you could explore further. (1-3 paragraphs) • Citations (i.e., reference to course readings, etc.), if used are to be done intext and follow this style: ‘Here is an example of the Clark’s ethnography of the Kumasi market in Ghana (1994, p.5). Clark states that ….’ or (Clark, 1994, p.5). • No Bibliography is required. • Minimum 5 (five) to maximum 8 (eight) pages, US letter size, doublespaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, normal margins. • Due Date via Turnitin: Sunday, November 7, 2021 @ NOON.
