Rest for the Soul
Matthew 11:28-30 (Links to an external site.)
In this passage, Jesus invites us to come to Him in our weariness and stress in order to find rest. But that’s not all, we must also take His yoke and learn a new way of dealing with the stressful burdens of life. These verses paint a picture of a divine transaction that occurs when we give up our stress-filled way of living life in order to learn about the life-giving way of Jesus.
It has been said that burnout and stress are different. For example, burnout is a defense characterized by discouragement, whereas, stress is characterized by over engagement. The exhaustion of burnout affects motivation and drive but the exhaustion of stress affects the physical energy. The reality of clergy burnout demands that change must occur. However, the choice is up to you. Burnout is not a part of God’s divine plan for your life.
For further reflection, consider this:
· Explain what you need to say “No” to in order to say “Yes” to this invitation of Jesus?
· What areas of life and ministry are causing you to feel weary and burdened?
· What does “rest” look like for you?
· What life lesson is Jesus teaching you when it comes to dealing with stress?
· What does it mean to find rest for your soul?
Write a 300-500 word post addressing the questions above.
