Assignment 4c: Chaplain Interview
Objective: Describe the self-care practices of someone in the chaplaincy field.
Instructions
Many people in ministry struggle to make time for self-care in their daily routine. However, some have developed good self-care practices to help them balance the call to care for others with the necessity of care for self.
Conduct an interview with a chaplain. If you are not going into the chaplaincy field (pastor, counselor, missionary, etc.) then find an interviewee who represents that ministry. This interview is geared to help you discover the self-care practices of someone in the chaplaincy field. Use this project to learn from others “in the trenches” as you prepare for ministry as a chaplain.
Ask your interviewee the following questions and record what their responses.
What is your current ministry setting and how long have you worked there?
What are unique hardships or challenges you’ve faced in your setting that made self-care difficult?
How do you balance the demands of work, family, etc. with the need for individual self-care?
What practices have you found helpful for emotional, relational, physical, and spiritual self-care?
What life lessons have you learned about the importance of self-care to avoid burnout?
What other advice would you give to someone preparing for ministry in a variety of settings (chaplain, pastor, missionary, counselor)?
Write up your findings in a report of 2 to 3 pages long.
