Background:
Svetlana Alexievich is the first writer to receive the Nobel Prize of Literature for her journalistic work, and many scholars and critics saw the award as an important acknowledgment of literary journalism. The Nobel committee praised Alexievich’s “polyphonic writing,” and reviewers of her work have commented on her “method from below” that extends the traditional boundaries of both journalism and literature. Sara Danius, Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy, explained, [Alexievich] is offering us a history of the human being … a history of the soul,” and in creating this history, “she’s actually devising a new genre … not just in terms of material, but in terms of form” (qtd. in a book review by Jonathon Sturgeon).
