Instructions

As a chaplain, you will be faced with many storms in your ministry. Jesus was able to find rest in the midst of the storm. In the same way, we need to learn how to experience the storm whether it is stilled, or whether it continues to rage but because Jesus is with us we can be at peace.

Read Jones, Chapters 1-6. These chapters discuss why we should stay in the “back of the boat” with Jesus and how ministry people get so involved with “doing” that they neglect the ministry of Presence.

Read the story of the storm at sea from Mark 4:35-40 at least twice.

Then find a quiet and comfortable place–inside or outside–where you can spend 15-20 minutes in prayer. Silence your cell phone and begin prayer by thanking God for this time of solitude for reflection. Begin by simply being still in God’s presence, deeply and quietly breathing in God’s shalom and protection in your life.

Address your experience of this time of solitude in the following 2 to 3 page reflective paper:

What words and images leap out of the text and into your life situation? If needed, read the text again and record the biblical wisdom for your life that you are receiving from God’s voice within this text.

Now, close your eyes and relax and image yourself caught in a “perfect storm.” You may imagine yourself walking along the seashore or in a boat. Visually, what is it like to be engulfed by the waves and wind? Describe how you feel when you are in the “center of a storm,” whether physically, spiritually, or emotionally.

As you look at your life and ministry, metaphorically visualize the “wind” and the “waves” that buffet you right now. Take a moment to visualize these challenges in more detail and your current response to them. What are the challenges that threaten your peace of mind and sense of security in life or ministry?

As you ponder the challenges in your life or ministry, remind yourself that Jesus is with you and that He will not let you be swept away by the wind and waves. As you visualize Jesus with you in the storm, describe how it feels to know that Jesus is your companion in the storm.

Take time to share your deepest needs with Jesus. Ask Him to be with you and protect and guide you through the storm. What guidance is Jesus giving you within your storm?

In closing, visualize Jesus as your companion. Take a few moments to experience God’s safety, protection, and guidance. Imagine Jesus guiding you and giving you strength to make it to the “far shore” of God’s vision for your life or ministry. Whenever you find yourself being buffeted by the storms of life or ministry, remember that Jesus is always with you.
