• Contrast Genji in the "Suma" and "Akashi" chapters with Genji in the capital. Do you think he develops or changes as a character, or do you see many continuities and similarities? In his relationships with women, in his friendships, in his engagement with the arts such as poetry, painting, and landscaping, and in his public role, how would you characterize Genji in the capital and outside of it?
• Describe elements of Continental culture (Chinese and Korean) on display in the "Suma" and "Akashi" chapters, and compare them with elements of Japanese court culture.  What do these kinds of descriptions of material culture contribute to our understanding of Genji's ordeals and experiences?
