World War One soldier
Submit a five page paper (roughly ~1250 word
research paper (double-spaced, Chicago Manual of Style formatting,
bibliography, and citations). Cover the life of a soldier
from World War I. The student should also include an explanation (one-
to-two paragraphs and/or images/mock-ups) of how they would design a
memorial to World War I casualties and/or veterans. Students are
encouraged to be creative in their designs.
Soldier named Chestang, Lee J.
It looks like he had enlisted, which is interesting, since he volunteered rather than waiting to be drafted.
Something else that caught my eye is that his official records list him as white, while the Mobile Museum of History lists him as African American/Creole. I don't know what accounts for that discrepancy in record keeping, but that piece of information is important for research purposes, because it meant that he served a different role in battle than most Black soldiers. It looks like he likely died in part of the greater Aisne-Marne offensive, given the date of his death and the regiment he was in.
