08 Apr Legal Foundations of Health Care

Health care professionals and patients face numerous challenging ethical and legal dilemmas every day. These difficult decisions could relate to medical treatments, which may need immediate response.
For instance, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen the shortage of ventilators and how health care providers must ration the limited supplies they have. Many hospitals have a limited number of ventilators compared to the number of COVID-19 patients who might need them. If you are a health care professional in a hospital setting, and the three patients listed below arrived on your shift, which one would you choose to give the one ventilator that is left? Explain your reasoning.
They are all struggling to breathe and have been brought to a triage tent at the same time:
a 16-year-old boy with diabetes
a 25-year-old mother
a 75-year-old grandfather
