Consider a movie or television program whose plot focuses on human responses to a disaster event. You may also consider a book you have read as well as media coverage (broadcast or written) of an actual event.
Write a reflection paper that addresses the following areas:
Give a brief overview of the storyline of the event. Identify the responses portrayed at the individual, organizational, and community levels. Based on the unit reading, were the responses depicted myths or realities?
For the myths depicted, why do you believe people believe them?
What effect do you feel the media or entertainment industry has on society when they depict such myths? Could it affect real people who may be faced with similar disasters?
How does the media and entertainment industry’s portrayal of myths, as well as the human tendency to believe them, affect the response and efforts of the emergency management personnel?
As an emergency management professional, how can this knowledge of myths and realities of disaster response help you in the future?
Your reflection paper should be a minimum of two pages, not including the title and reference pages. While not required, any sources used should be properly cited.
