Case Study: Overcoming EHR challenges
Three independent orthopedic practices recently implemented the same EHR product. Each practice struggled with their implementation because they were unprepared in many respects to move to an EHR.
Each of the practices identified the lack of basic computing skills among staff members as a major challenge.
Advanced Orthopedics: Reported that some of their longtime staff members were unable or unwilling to work with the new EHR system.
First Alliance Orthopedics: Reported that staff were upset because the new EHR actually created new work for them. For example, the office manager reported spending 95 percent of her time resolving IT issues, rather than fulfilling her other duties.
County Line Orthopedics: Reported that patients complained having to fill out electronic forms prior to their visit along with multiple patient forms when entering the office. One staff member explained some of the patient data didn’t migrate into the new system.
Your Task: Choose an orthopedic practice from above and as a healthcare manager, evaluate the scenario and describe how you would help the organization resolve their EHR challenges.
