YOUTH HEALTHY FOOD ACT

Purpose: To promote and enforce the healthy consumption of food among the youth.

The Canadian government (again with assent of the provinces) restricts the selling of selling and serving of unhealthy food to those that are 12 years old younger in all public and private businesses:

-An unhealthy serving of food is understood to include one or more of the following criteria:

(1) The single meal/serving exceeds 900 calories

(2) The fat content of said meal/serving exceeds 30% of the calories of the meal/serving.

(3) No more than 50 grams of sugar per serving (daily recommended intake of sugar is 54 grams a day or 12 tsp)   

Enforcement: Children 12 years and older will be issued a Federal food pass identification card that will be scanned or checked by the business before their purchase. Failure to have a card will require a business to not to sell the food to the customer.

Punishment: minimum fine $300 to a maximum $10 000 (depending on the number of offences) to the business caught selling unhealthy food to minors.
