How does Donnelly discuss self-determination versus sovereignty

Part 1:

For this activity, please spend some time exploring the Human Rights Research Guide here: http://guides.lib.uw.edu/c.php?g=341423&p=3725087.

Focus on the primary sources link and the organizations link for this week.  If you have begun narrowing down your ideas for what country you want to write about for your Country Research Paper, use this opportunity to explore sources related to that country.  Explore multiple different topics until you find a set of two useful sources in each of the following categories:

1) Sources produced by those experiencing a human rights violation (could be local organizations and activists, court cases, etc. – try the “Human Rights Documents Online” link under Primary Sources)

2) Sources of law related to those harms (treaty text, protocols, etc. – on this one I recommend going straight to the UN website, and our class go-to the OHCHR, https://www.ohchr.org/en/treaty-bodies) (Links to an external site.)

3) Sources produced by NGOs or government agencies (reports, etc. – using the “Organizations” link on the research guide)

Submit a document here listing the full citations (not library web addresses) for these six sources and a sentence or two about each.  Note that it’s OK if you are unsure how to cite a document or treaty, just list the title, where you got it, any date or author you can find, and any other pertinent info.

Part 2:

These short weekly reading journal posts will be your opportunity to reflect critically on the readings assigned for that week.  These posts are an exercise in engaging all of the reading questions provided using evidence from the reading and also beginning to ask your own questions.  Each response should include at least 2-3 pieces of evidence for your ideas from the reading you are responding to; at least 1-2 statements of your own analysis of the reading; and (overall for the entire post) at least 1-2 questions that you have identified as thought-provoking or interesting to you in the readings.  Please number your answers indicating your response to each question.  The lowest reading journal post grade will be dropped.

You must include page numbers in each post. I do not require any specific citation format. Just include (author last name, page number) at the end of the relevant sentences. Please note that you must cite when you draw any ideas from the text, whether or not you explicitly quote it. And you must draw your ideas from the text because that is the assignment. Please be sure that if and when you use a direct quotation from the reading, you also explain what that quotation means in your own words.

1. Of all the dimensions or versions of universality that Donnelly describes, is there one that you find particularly convincing? Describe it and explain why you selected it.

2. How does Donnelly discuss self-determination versus sovereignty?

3. What does Waltz mean by “small states”? How does that designation relate to their power?

4. Waltz uses four categories to describe small states’ contributions to the human rights project. Name and describe at least two of them (number your answers 2a and 2b), providing an illustrative example for each.
