Gender and Attitudes Towards English Varieties Annotated Bibliography

An annotated bibliography is, most basically, a works cited page that has a summary or brief commentary of each text listed below the bibliographic entry.  Your annotated bibliography will include some of the best sources that you have found for your research essay and more sources than you might use in your final draft of the research essay.

Source Requirements:

The annotated bibliography must have a minimum of eight sources, with one bibliographic entry for each source:

two background sources,

two exhibit sources,

two argument sources, and

two method

Think through the work each source is capable of doing and how you will use it in your research. You may include primary sources in your annotated bibliography, but they should be in the exhibit category. Tertiary sources (like reference sources or literature reviews) are fine background sources, but probably not appropriate as exhibits. (If you’re not sure, let’s discuss it.)  With the exception of exhibit sources, all sources must be scholarly.

  • Other Requirements:

Introduction: Include a short introduction (250-500 words) to the annotated bibliography that explains the project, the most important findings or themes from your secondary research, and how your project relates to those themes. Put another way, the introduction gives your audience a sense of what others are saying about your topic and what you plan to add to that conversation with your own research.

  • Each entry in the annotated bibliography should:

Include a complete MLA- or APA-style citation

  • Include a 50-word (minimum, excluding citation) annotation of the source that includes a summary (explains what the source is about) and how you might use it, including whether the sources is to be used for background, exhibit, argument, or method.
