1-Did Americans’ desire for freedom and mobility engender the modern automotive industry and 20th century flight programs, or did those industries, with mass production of affordable vehicles and promises of greater speed and efficiancy of travel, trigger a shift in American ideas about freedom and mobility?
2-Using what you know of the industrial past, think about the 20th century and beyond. In your educated opinion, have we been shaping technology, or is it the other way around? Was “rise-of-the-machines” science fiction rooted in real-world anxieties over the loss of jobs to automation?
