12 Aug Black community related issues or events via organization websites, blogs, news, and other online media throughout the quarter.
Overview of Assignment:
The assignment is meant to facilitate a close examination of African Diaspora and Black
communities in European countries by each student in the class and to enable students to consider
specific communities in relation to class readings, lectures and presented media. During the
quarter, students are required to write two 2–3 page (single spaced) mini–essays that examine and
discuss aspects or issues related to African Diaspora/Black European communities in a selected
country. Students will also have an opportunity to discuss their findings in a brief presentation for
class viewing via the Discussions section.
The assignment requirements are as follows:
1) Students are to choose a country (approved by the professor) and monitor
contemporary African diaspora/Black community related issues or events via
organization websites, blogs, news, and other online media throughout the quarter.
2) Each mini–essay should discuss at least three examples from monitored data.
3) The mini–essay should consider the social, political, historical and/or cultural
relevance of the data.
4) Students are to incorporate a comparative discussion of current course readings, media,
and lectures in relation to the data from their selected country (at least three examples).
5) The comparative component of the discussion should relate to the assigned readings
leading up to the current mini–essay (i.e. the first mini–essay should include a discussion of
at least three events, topics, individuals or issues covered in the course readings, media, and
lectures between April 5th and May 3rd and the second mini–essay should address areas
covered between May 3rd and May 26th).
6) Be sure to include a works cited/reference page (this is in addition to the 2–3 single
spaced length required).
