For this week’s reflection, I’d like to know what you are thinking about the final data-based project. This is worth 30 points and will be due at the end of finals. I have a very open-ended view of what counts as a “data-based” project (which is a pun of “database”). The project does not have to involve analyzing data in python / Jupyter notebooks (you could use other tools like Google Sheets if you are more familiar), but coding is encouraged. It can involve you collecting data yourself such as with a survey, but you can also find and analyze publicly-available data. I am really good at finding data, so let me know if there is a topic you are interested in, and I can help find data.
For now, I am more interested in hearing from you about the kinds of topics that interest you and questions you might be asking. I’d also like to know how comfortable you feel with the Wed labs, and if there is one in particular that is closer to what you’d like to do (ex: visualizing survey results, ranking the “best” whatever, classifying text, predictions of people’s futures like those discussed in this upcoming week’s readings). Or if there is something you’d like to do that we haven’t learned yet (or are not even sure if it is possible), I’m happy to help give you guidance.
This assignment is not a formal proposal and you are not committed to what you propose. If you have a few different ideas that you are debating between, say them all. A formal proposal will come later — you must either send me a proposal via e-mail or book a meeting with me to discuss it over Zoom/in-person by Fri, May 13.
