Choose any nonprofit organization that aligns with your own passions and interests. The organization does not have to currently be hiring, but needs to be an organization that you can do some online research to learn more about their work. See included examples, and note that you can bring in some personality to your cover letter and resume.
First, write a 1-2 page cover letter that addresses:
1) How and why your skills and interests would make you a great employee for that specific NPO
2) An understanding of the NPOs mission and role in the community, politics, economy, etc., and
3) Specific suggestions for supporting the organization’s long-term sustainability (more volunteers, more funding, etc)
Next, prepare a 1-2 page resume that highlights your specific skills. Include any relevant work, volunteer, or mentoring experience.
