Many health care providers have stigmatized views about individuals with substance use disorders. The view of addiction as a choice or a moral failing has a long history in our society and can make it difficult to empathize with a patient who is unmotivated to change their substance use, even while experiencing negative health consequences. If you had the opportunity to facilitate an addiction treatment program admission directly from an ER setting, how might stigma present a barrier to using Motivational Interviewing techniques with someone who presents with an abscess after chronic injection use of heroin?
