17 Aug Think about how Africans were utilized in labor production during colonial times.
For this discussion post, please watch the documentary Black in Latin America: Cuba, The Next Revolution. While you watch the film, contemplate the similarities and differences regarding the concept(s) of race and racism in both Cuba and the United States. Think about how Africans were utilized in labor production during colonial times. Afterwards, write a summary/opinion post on the film. Consider including answers to the following questions in your post: early on, how did the Cuban government try to “whiten” the culture and society of Cuba? Did the revolution (and/or socialism) put an end to racism? What milestones in race equality could one say Cuba has achieved – especially when compared to U.S. society? How did the collapse of the Soviet Union impact race, class, and living standards in Cuban society? How and why do you think that the U.S. has historically viewed race differently than Cuba (and the rest of Latin America for that matter–see page 169 in your etext)? <– There is a lot to talk about regarding this question considering what is going on right now in the U.S.
