It’s important to help an underperformer understand that they are in fact under performing. A manager should observe the issues, make notes, and speak to the employee. The manager should explain what the role is and what is expected of the employee. They might take this time to conduct a formal review. It’s also important to understand if that employee is coachable. If they are not capable of learning to function appropriately, they may be in the wrong role.
It is also important to monitor their progress. Managers should acknowledge the positive changes, and continue to give advice about the progress yet to be made. If the changes have not been made, it is the manager’s responsibility to terminate that employee.
