ENA101/ENG101 Essay #3 Fall I 2022 Professor Chandler

Choose ONE of the prompts below:

Write about a Disney fairy tale movie or the movie Shrek. Compare the movie to the fairy tale tropes and stereotypes we have been discussing. Or you can compare the movie to one of the stories we have read.

1. If you are comparing the Disney movie to the story we read, think about the changes Disney makes to the story. Focus on one or two changes and write about the impact or significance of those changes. Is Disney reinforcing or challenging those stereotypes?

2. If you are writing about a Disney movie (in general) or Shrek, think about what the movie says about the fairy tale tropes we have discussed. Is Shrek or the Disney movie reinforcing or challenging those stereotypes? Focus on one stereotype/trope and write about the impact or significance of the changes made by the movie or the impact or significance of keeping things the same in the movie.

Some areas to possibly focus on:

· How the prince is portrayed

· How the princess is portrayed

· How the villain is represented

· The role of violence

· How love is represented or “true love’s first kiss”

Be sure to address the significance or “so what” in your essay. Some guidelines to consider:

· Make sure your essay has a thesis in the introduction (last sentence). Your thesis must make an argument. Include the title of the movie in your thesis.

· Make sure your essay proves/supports your thesis. Provide at least 3 quotes or refer to 3 scenes from the movie for support. Make sure you follow MLA in-text citation (with quotation marks if it’s dialogue, a signal phrase, and list Disney or Dreamworks).

· Analyze the quotes/scene you have selected — show how/why they support your thesis.

· Avoid plot summary. I have read the fairy tales and seen most of the Disney movies and Shrek. Essays that contain mostly plot summary will receive a lower grade. Analyze – don’t describe!

· Make sure your essay is organized. Take time to plan your essay before you start writing.

· Make sure the language is solid. Your writing needs to be clear and free of grammar mistakes. Take time to proofread your essay.

· The essay must be at least 625 words; include a word count at the end. Essays must have 12-point font, one-inch margins, and be double-spaced. The essay is due Friday November 18th by noon . Post it in Google classroom as a word or Google doc.
