For this discussion, you will compose a draft of a division-classification paragraph. Then, you will have the opportunity to receive peer feedback on your initial draft.

As one of the nine patterns of paragraph development, division-classification involves sorting numbers of things into categories according to a single principle. For example, there are various modes of transportation. Transportation can include airways, waterways, roadways, railways, and pipelines. The single principle of division is how people and/or goods are moved from one location to another.

In another example, when at a baseball game, you might find yourself surrounded by three types of fans: the fanatic, the average fan, and the fair-weathered fan. The larger group of fans is classified into categories based on how they feel about the team.

Once you have selected a topic for the division-classification paragraph, create and post a rough draft of your paragraph, by Day 3, starting with the topic sentence. Be sure you select a subject that can be broken down or classified into three categories.

Your draft should contain:

  • approximately 200-250 words,
  • a well-developed topic sentence,
  • adequate detail to support the topic sentence,
  • the use of three categories, and
  • a concluding statement that ties the details together.

Instructions

Post your draft by the third day of the module. After your initial post, review and reply to a minimum of two peers' posts (division-classification paragraphs), noting whether they met all the requirements of the assignment. Provide meaningful and constructive feedback to your peers, so they can use it to improve their next revision, by the seventh day of the module
