The student will complete a research project paper. The paper will present data from the student’s original research or an outline of how original research could be collected and presented for a project specific geographic subfield.
INSTRUCTIONS
Choose a realistic project at an accessible data collection location where you have an interest.
The project must be feasible in scale and scope for a student’s time and budget. The paper will
include a minimum of 2,000 words. The paper must include at least eight (8) scholarly sources
(primary sources must come from .edu or .gov sources, journals, or books).
The research paper is a capstone assignment building off of discussions and previous written
submissions throughout the course. The purpose of the assignment is to encourage the student to
outline and/or undertake a research project, denoting time, equipment, skills, assistance, and
budgeting typically undertaken by a professional geographer.
The project may cover any topic that falls under the heading of geographic research. Suggestions
include:
Identifying and mapping public transportation options in your area, denoting service
levels.
Observing stream levels for sediment transfer, denoting known pollution sources.
Surveying commuters about carpooling or vanpooling in your area.
Roping off an acre of timber and making tree counts by species and tree condition
(healthy, dying, dead).
Reviewing GIS and Census level data to predict where new schools, hospitals, or
churches should be located in your area.

subheadings as needed.
