Week Three Discussion 5: Poetry Reflection
For this discussion, please read “The Art of (Reading) Poetry” in the textbook (761-8) and “Poets on Poetry” in the following link: http://www.poetsgraves.co.uk/poets_on_poetry.htm.
Respond to one of the following sets of questions. Refer to specific poems in your response.
1. Comment on one of the brief definitions of poetry quoted in “Poets on Poetry.” Explain whether and why you think it is a good or bad definition. Refer to one or two poems we’ve read to illustrate your opinion.
2. Read the “The Art of (Reading) Poetry” in the textbook, which includes several poems about poetry, a genre known as Ars Poetica (Latin for the Art of Poetry). What is the relationship between what one of the poems says about poetry and how it says it? Does the poem embody or demonstrate what it says about poetry?
3. Which poem in “The Art of (Reading) Poetry” seems the most compatible with your own understanding of poetry is and does? Which poem is the least compatible with your idea of poetry? Explain using specific details from the poem.
