Guidelines for Journal Article Critique Assignments
Select an empirical (i.e., quantitative) article related specifically to school counseling that is of interest to you. The article should be from a scholarly journal and published within the past five years (2017 – present).
The article will discuss a research study that was conducted to address a particular topic, issue, or problem. You will summarize information about the study in an APA formatted critique consisting of the cover page, at least three full pages of text, and the references page (no Abstract required). The summary should include the following:
• Introductory discussion of the topic, issue, or problem
• Description of the purpose
• Indication of the research questions/hypotheses
• Description of the methodology used
• Description of the findings
• Description of the recommendations
• Indication and discussion of any limitations to the study (if stated)
• Your critique – For example, do you believe the findings and recommendations stated within the article are reasonable, feasible, applicable, et cetera?
NOTE: You must submit the URL (web site link) of the chosen article. This should be listed on
the references page. Also, please know the criteria listed within the Evaluation Rubric for Writing
Assignments (Appendix A of the course syllabus) will be utilized in evaluating your critique.
