Introduction
Over the course of this discussion, we have explored various topics related to leadership and creative solution implementation in the business field. In this reflection paper, I will provide a summary of my key takeaways from this conversation, emphasizing how different or similar my views are in relation to these topics. Additionally, I will draw upon four peer-reviewed sources to support my ideas.
Significance of creativity and creative problem solving in business
The need of imagination and innovative problem solving in business was one of the most important things I learned from our chat. Leaders must promote an innovative and creative culture if they want their organizations to remain competitive in a world that is continuously changing. This can be achieved through various means, such as providing employees with the necessary resources and support, encouraging experimentation and risk-taking, and promoting a collaborative work environment.
One of the most important factors influencing innovative behaviour, according to Scott and Bruce (1994), is the presence of an organisational culture that supports experimentation and innovation. Similarly, Amabile (1996) emphasizes the importance of intrinsic motivation and the ability to work on meaningful tasks as key factors in promoting creativity and innovation.
Change as a creative and rational process
Another topic we discussed was the role of change in the creative problem-solving process. While change is often viewed as a disruptive force, it can also provide an opportunity for organizations to innovate and develop new solutions. As such, change should be viewed as both a creative and a rational process, with the goal of driving positive transformation within an organization.
In their research, Drazin, Glynn, and Kazanjian (1999) provide a sensemaking viewpoint on creativity in organisations, contending that this comprises a process of establishing a problem, understanding it, and coming up with alternative solutions. This process is not linear, and requires both rational and creative thinking in order to effectively address complex and multifaceted problems.
Benefits of developing various perspectives to problem-solving
Another key takeaway from our conversation was the importance of developing various perspectives when it comes to problem-solving. By embracing diverse viewpoints and engaging in active listening, leaders can gain a more comprehensive understanding of the problem at hand and generate more innovative solutions.
Mumford (2012) argues that the process of problem construction is an important part of creative problem solving, as it involves generating multiple perspectives and interpretations of a given problem. This approach can lead to more innovative solutions, as it encourages individuals to think outside of their own preconceived notions and biases.
Ethical considerations of change management
Finally, we discussed the importance of ethical considerations when it comes to change management. While change can be a positive force for innovation and growth, it is important to ensure that these changes do not come at the expense of employees, customers, or other stakeholders.
Bucic, Harris, and Arli (2012) argue that the development of new products or services should be done in an ethical and socially responsible manner, taking into account the impact on all relevant stakeholders. This can be achieved through the establishment of clear ethical standards and practices, as well as regular communication and engagement with stakeholders throughout the change management process.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this conversation has highlighted the importance of creativity, change, and ethical considerations in the business field. Leaders may promote good change and produce more innovative solutions by building an environment that values innovation, welcoming different viewpoints, and giving ethical issues first priority. To support these ideas, I have drawn upon various peer-reviewed sources, including Scott and Bruce (1994), Amabile (1996), Drazin, Glynn, and Kazanjian (1999), Mumford (2012), and Bucic, Harris, and Arli (2012).
