SALES SPEECH Given to Small Groups and Given AS IF We Were the ?Special Audience
Why a Sales Speech? No matter what field of study or career you are pursuing, the ability to sell is a valuable skill. Whatever you are selling, it is important to know how to convince people through persuasive communication. The purpose of your second speech will be to sell your special audience? a product, idea, or a service.
How to Prepare? The week before the Sales Speech, you will be assigned to a small group and together before class time, you can consult with each other. During class, you will have a limited amount of time to work on the Sales before giving a 1-3 minute speech in a small group.
How the Speeches Will Be Graded? After you have had some time in class to consult with your initial group about your speech choices, new groups will be formed that include students who have different audiences than yours. You will give your speeches to the new students, and you will all give feedback to each other, and you will also grade each other.
If youre using PP to supplement your speech, you can use your OCC email to obtain FREE PowerPoint 365 software. This link should take you to free software option:
If using PP Remember that in case you need to give the speech online, use a very dark background color (dark blue, teal, green, or purple are best) with a very light yellow or white font 32 pt or larger. Be sure to look at all PP guidelines prior to preparing a presentation and prior to attending class.
In-Class Students in LEC classes: You will give your speeches in the classroom, so you wont be using the classroom technology. I rec. using some type of visual, so if you have a phone or laptop for a picture of your product, service, or idea that would help your speech to have more impact. Students who cannot attend class on that day might be able to give their speeches via Zoom. (So also read all the Online-S instructions too.)
Online-S Students: You will give your speech during class, and using PP or Google Docs with a slideshow or picture of your product, service, or idea would help your speech to have more impact.
Be sure your face is easy to see and well-lit!
If you have a screen next to you for a visual, we still need to be able to see you.
**Minimize all white areas or test to make sure your PP images are readable / seeable!
What You Should Learn from this Assignment
1. to apply audience analysis theories
Consider what the audience is interested in and how your service, idea, or product will benefit them. Do some research on your audience and try to pick a topic that will help them! Use examples they can relate to, etc.
2. to develop a simple, clearly organized outline using Monroes Motivated Sequence Attention, Need, Satisfaction, Visualization, Action (This speech is more like a commercial, so it doesnt have a complete Introduction, Body, and Conclusion.)
3. to experiment with methods of decreasing speech anxiety
4. to continue dynamic, credible vocal and facial delivery skills
5. to expand your mental facilities by thinking creatively
6. to use any visual you have effectively
Process for this Assignment
You and your initial group members will be assigned an audience. (Prior to week 6, there may be an opportunity for you to request an audience, but not everyone might get the audience they request.)
Prior to class, research your audience.
Prior to class, pick a topic (product, service, or an idea) to sell to your audience. It needs to be a real one or one you could actually implement. You could sell an organization on the idea of supporting a different group by giving money, by volunteering, or by donating something. You could ask your group to invest in a start-up business you are designing, or persuade them to use your restaurant facilities or catering services, or etc. Be creative, and pick topics appropriate for your audience. You cannot pretend to be someone you are not. Dont pretend you work somewhere you dont, and dont pretend you can do something that you dont do. You also cannot pick a group you are already a member of. I would like you to learn about local organizations too!
Prior to class, clearly identify your Specific Purpose. Start with the words, To persuade my audience to?? Your General Purpose to ?To persuade.
Prior to class, identify your clear thesis (also called central idea) statement. See Chapter 5 for more examples. You DONT say your specific purpose statement during your speech, but you DO say your thesis statement (central idea) during your speech. It is usually your Satisfaction statement.
Prior to class, brainstorm ways the audience is hurt when they dont use your product, service, or idea (P.S.I.). Then brainstorm ways the P.S.I. will benefit the audience. You should (with your team) identify reasons your audience would want to buy or invest! Then narrow your focus, and decide on your arguments / support.
Prior to class, identify the Attention Getter, the Visualization, and the Action Statement. Then, upload your outline to the Sales D2L folder. Ideally, your speech will clearly have all 5 parts of Monroes Motivated Sequence (MMS): Attention, Need, Satisfaction, Visualization, and Action. This can change during class, but you need a completed outline prior to class.
Maybe prepare a visual to compliment your speech? If you use PP or Google slides and can use the PP during your speech, then be sure to follow the guidelines (and look at the full list of guidelines in D2L):
Use a LOT of contrast (Dark blue and dark yellow= not enough contrast. Design these slides as if you were in front of a classroom audience using a projector. Royal blue background with white font would work really well for contrast. If speaking with a TV monitor next to you, use a VERY DARK background. (Check all white on the Zoom before speech day!)
Use Animation to make the text appear? or enter VERY fast (Dont use elaborate entrances for texts / slide changes)
Use short phrases (Follow the 7 x 7 rule)
Limit / Dont use periods (You shouldnt be using full sentences!)
Use upper and lowercase font
Use Sans Serif font that is 32 pts. or larger
Use Large pictures usually 1 per page not multiple pictures per page
Show text and pictures AS you talk about them
See PowerPoint guideline sheet in D2L for more ideas.
During class (and after announcements/instruction), you will likely have 30 min. to consult with your teammates about your speeches. You do NOT have to all have the same speeches and you can make changes to your speech outline, but talking about the speech ideas will likely make your speeches stronger! You will likely have an additional 30 more minutes to fine-tune, rehearse your speeches to your initial team.
Then, you will likely have about 15 minutes to make needed alterations to your personal speech before being put in a NEW team that you will give the speech to.
If you use notes, try to JUST use the start of sentences, or the 5 sentences that each represent the 5 parts of MMS.
Upload an outline just before class that identifies your audience, topic, headings, and the 5 sentences you think youll use for MMS.
During class time, you will grade the speeches in the NEW teams by identifying which students had the strongest:
Topics and Examples for Your Audience
5-Part MMS format
Delivery (For online-S, this will include framing & lighting))
Visual
Overall feedback
Instructions about how to give feedback be detailed at the start of class.
Students identified as having the strongest elements in these areas will receive the most points. The students who have fewer high marks in these areas will receive fewer points. The final grades (points) for students who give their speeches will likely range from 7-10.
Speech Time Limit — 1-3 minutes
Before giving your speech, tell your classroom audience about the Sales? audience you picked. IOW: tell us about the mission / focus of the group we are imagining we are part of, our typical demographics, our membership criteria, and any other pertinent information. In this part, dont tell us what you are selling. Please keep this part to 30 seconds or less. Talking about your audience is not part of your time limit!!
