SOC360 | Social Movements | Winter 2023 Paper Proposal Instructions The paper proposal is an opportunity for you to get your essay structure and argument on paper, and to get feedback on your work before submitting the full final paper. Remember, the final paper is a case study, where you form a research question about your chosen social movement and make a theoretically grounded argument that answers that question. The proposal will have two sections: 1. Introduction 2. Annotated bibliography Your proposal should include an introductory section of about a page, where you outline your case, describe your research ?puzzle, and pose your research question. You can use this proposal as the introduction for your final paper. Following which, you should include an annotated bibliography of five to seven sources, where you summarize the main argument of the source, and explain how you will use it in your paper. You should begin by clearly naming and describing your social movement case study. You can choose any social movement that interests you to study it can be from any time period, from any location, and at any scale. Next, you should explain your research ?puzzle. This puzzle is some aspect of your case that is interesting or worthwhile to study, or that sheds light on some broader phenomenon. Your puzzle should be clearly named and explained and should be narrow enough to be answerable within the scope of this class and this paper. Remember that you want a puzzle that is answered with an argument based in sociological theory (not with simple description). This section should also include your research question (this should be phrased as a question). As an example, if your puzzle is what lead to #MeToos rapid spread, your research question could be ?what resources were leverage to allow MeToo to go viral?? Or, if youre interested in why women achieved the vote in 1918 in Canada and not before, you could have a research question like ?what political opportunity structures supported womens suffrage in the post-war period?? As you work through this proposal, keep these requirements in mind: 1. Your case should be clearly named and described 2. Your puzzle needs to be answerable sociologically 3. Your research questions should be stated as a question Next, your annotated bibliography should include 5 to 7 sources that will help you write your final paper. The sources in your annotated bibliography should be academic; however, you are more than welcome to draw on non-academic sources such as newspaper articles in your paper. For each of these annotations, you should include the main research question and argument of the article, as well as how you plan to use it. That is to say, you should explain clearly what this source contributes to your comparative case study does it explain theories or concepts that will support your argument? Does it add detail to the comparison youre making between the two cases? Etc. As you work through this bibliography, keep these requirements in mind: 1. Each annotation needs to include a proper reference for the article 2. You need to explain the main findings and arguments of each article 3. You need to be clear on what you will use the article for in your final paper
