As nurses, we are familiar with ethical principles in healthcare and strictly adhere to the ANA Code of Ethics. Similar ethics apply when conducting research; however, it has only been in the last 70 years that specific guidelines have been developed for research involving human subjects. Before the development of universal guidelines, protection of human subjects in research studies was the responsibility of individual researchers, which resulted in numerous human rights violations.
