Critical reflection on your own elementary or secondary school experiences as a student or as a teacher 6- 8-pages double-spacedDescription of assignment How ÒunsafeÓ/ÒsafeÓ, ÒpositiveÓ or ÒqueerÓ (Goldstein et al 2007) were/are your schooling experiences? To what extent, if at all, did/does your schooling provide you with tools to understand issues of inequity and oppression in regards to homophobia, cis-hetereonormativity, and/or transphobia? Choose one moment or a set of moments from your own schooling experience as a student or as a teacher and reflect upon how it provided or didnÕt provide a safe, positive and/or queer space for teaching and learning. Discuss to what extent, if any, your schooling experience provided you with tools to understand issues of homophobia, hetereonormativity, and/or transphobia. Evaluation of assignment You will be graded not on the schooling experiences you choose to write about, but on how you analyze them in relation to the safe, positive or queer framework put forth by Goldstein et al (2007). Some suggestions on how to proceed:• Your critical essay should start with a clear statement of the debate, controversy or pedagogical dilemma you are going to discuss and why it’s an important issue to write about.• Name the articles you are going to discuss in the essay and explain why they are helpful to your discussion.• Then provide summary of the main argument of each reading and its position on the debate, controversy or dilemmas you are discussing. • If are examining two readings by two different authors, it might be useful to compare and contrast the differing approaches used by each author to the issue at hand.• Explore how the arguments articulated by the author or authors relate to the debates, controversies and/or pedagogical dilemmas in your own schooling context. Where it is relevant, you can make use of other course readings, opening remarks, and in-class discussion. • In this reflective discussion, you should apply what you have learned from your critical reading of the course material to particular debates in your own schooling experience. • This reflective discussion section provides an opportunity to identify the interplay between academic debates, life experiences, and your experience of learning in this course. As well, I hope it will be helpful in constructing your own voice and point of view. Writing Pointers:• Create a cover page with the title of assignment• Number the pages of your assignment.• Double space your essay and leave ample room for comments in the margins.• Please include a bibliography or reference list that uses APA.
