Analysis of Jane Doe’s Informative Speech:
Rape by Any Other Name
Analysis must be typed, double-spaced –500-700 words
Read the speech and analyze according to the following criteria:
1. According to your lecture notes there are three basic types of informative speeches.
Identify and explain which type this speech best represents (description, demonstration,
explanation). Justify your answer with examples from the text of the speech.
2. In class we discussed four main functions of informative speeches. Which function(s) is
being fulfilled by Jane Doe’s presentation? What is the main thrust of the speech –the
specific purpose (what does she want the audience to gain from listening to her information)?
Justify/support your answer.
3. Assess (evaluate) the introduction and conclusion of the speech. Does Jane Doe establish
her ethos by indicating her interest or qualifications for speaking on the subject? Does she do
it in the introduction, and if not, was her placement of this information as effective as it could
have been? Does she gain the attention of the audience and arouse their interest in the
speech? Please identify the thesis statement and preview used (very effectively) by the
speaker? In the conclusion does Jane Doe summarize the main points of her speech –does
she reiterate her central theme and end with a memorable concluding remark? How effective
were the transitions in enhancing the smooth flow of the message (as much as one can tell
from the written text)—did they help to keep the audience focused on the theme of the
speech, and on how each of the main points related to each other and to the theme?
4. Evaluate the speaker’s use of citations and references in the speech. Were they effective?
Did they enhance the credibility of the speaker and the message? Were they inadequate?
Which sections could have been made more effective through the use of citations in order to
emphasize the credibility, importance, and objectivity of the information?
5. Did you think it was a good speech? Why/why not?
