Case 3: Leigh According to the moral theory, Leigh’s behavior with shoplifting, sexual activity, running away from home, and substance abuse would be the result of a lack of morals. It might be argued that Leigh’s parents neglected to instill upstanding moral values in her. Because Leigh is 16 years old, a moral theorist might suggest a spiritual or religious intervention to try and strengthen her value systems and will power. In contrast to moral theory, the disease/medical theory would take the approach that Leigh’s behaviors are symptomatic of an underlying disorder of the brain—she is sick. As Leigh began to experiment with substances and risky behaviors, she altered the reward pathways in her brain, thus causing both craving and continued use over time. Treatment would be focused on abstinence and increasing sober support systems based on the medical approach.
