Midterm Essay Questions, Essays Due October 22 via SafeAssign on BB

Below are the questions for the midterm essay. Please choose one question (only one) and write a 5-page essay on it. The essay should be typed, double-spaced, font Times New Roman, size 12, with reasonable margins. Make sure you include citations, either in footnotes or in parentheses. Please follow the essay guidelines and grading criteria posted in the folder "How to do well in this class" in Content on BB. We will also discuss the guidelines in class. The essay is due on October 22 (Sunday) by 11:59pm and should be submitted via SafeAssign on blackboard. Do not email essays to me. 1. "Politics is the art of lying convincingly in order to gain power." Do you agree and why? Be sure to discuss at least three definitions of politics and provide examples.

2. If you live in an illiberal democracy, what would be three of the biggest problems for you as a citizen? Explain what "Illiberal democracy" means and provide examples.
