Social media negatively impacts psychological well-being. Even though social media is a great communication tool that helps people share information, thoughts, and ideas, it has multiple side effects. For example, researchers who were behind a 2017 Canadian study found that students who use social media for more than two hours a day are more likely to rate their mental health as poor (paragraph 6). Social media not only disrupts sleep, which can cause depression and memory loss but can also cause mental health problems because of cyberbullying.

Self-care: Social media can cause anxiety and depression and may cause more negative feelings. However, there are positive effects, such as connecting with others and expressing yourself.

Emotional Intelligence: Social media has made it easier to communicate with others, but it decreases face-to-face interactions, limiting their ability to read and interpret nonverbal cues. Plus, you can't tell if someone is lying or telling the truth because they are behind a screen.

Ethics: Fake news can spread like wildfire. Fake news, cyberbullying, and misuse of user data and privacy are critical ethical issues in the social media world.

  • Did they support their position convincingly using credible resources?
  • Which of their points makes the most sense to you, even if you made a case for the opposing viewpoint?
  • Post an article, video, or visual to reinforce a peer's idea or challenge them to see their point from a different perspective.
