Scenario:
· Tom McBride is a 46 year old male in the Emergence Department complaining of weakness, dizziness, and a headache. He reports working outside in hot weather
for 6 hours without adequate water intake. Nausea but no vomiting. He appears flushed and slightly diaphoretic.
Vital signs:
Temp: 99.1°F (37.3°C)
· HR: 108 bpm
· BP: 98/60 mmHg
· RR: 20
· O₂ Sat: 97% on room air
Skin: Dry lips, poor skin turgor
Neuro: Alert and oriented × 4, slightly slow responses
· Order: Start peripheral IV and administer 1 Liter of 0.9% Normal Saline via gravity tubing. Discontinue IV when complete.
