Law and Policy: Short paper #3

Format

Writing in policy and the law requires a clear, cogent, and analytical writing style. An analytical writing style requires writing in a manner that is: 

Clear and cohesive, with clear connections between ideas. 

Supported by evidence through integration of factual assertions and research. 

Focused on evaluating relevant information through comparison and contrasting; and recognition of counter – arguments. 

For this paper please use: 

1. Formal academic paper in APA format. 

2. Double spaced, 1 inch margins. 

3. No less than 6 pages, and no more than 8 pages. 

4. A minimum of five sources listed in the reference list. 

Sources

Arguments, facts, and ideas must be supported by evidence through appropriate references. Examples of appropriate sources include, but are not limited to peer reviewed articles, statutes, reports by government agencies; research and reports by non – partisan organizations, and major newspapers. 

Specific Guidelines

On page 459 of the textbook the author has included a table of policy issues. The issues in the table are the issues the author has identified as being some of the most likely to be in conflict over the next decade. In your paper you must choose one of the policy areas from the table as the focus of your paper. You will apply what you have learned about the American political system, federalism, and policy change, in this final paper. (see below for options)

In your paper please address the following: 

1. Describe the policy area, policy history, purpose, and importance in American society. 

2. Explain whether the policy area is likely to remain stable or change over the next decade. 

1. What factors will affect the creation, modification, or implementation of new policy in the particular policy area? 

2. How will changes in political power affect the policy area? 

3. What theory or theories are useful in supporting your argument regarding the likelihood of change in the policy area? 

3. Explain how the structure of our political system, including federalism, will (or will not) affect stability or change in the policy area.
