Instructions

John Foxe (1516-1587) was an English Puritan who lived during the reign of Mary I, also infamously called Blood Mary. England had been deemed a Protestant Anglican nation under Henry VIII, but Henry’s daughter Mary was determined to return England to Catholicism, so she launched a prosecution of Protestants. In response, Foxe wrote his Book of Martyrs that chronicled the persecutions under Mary. In subsequent editions during his lifetime, he expanded his research to include the era from the early church to his present time. Next to John Bunyan’s Pilgrim Progress, it is easily one of the most influential books in Christian history next to the Bible itself.

Read Foxe’s Book of Martyrs (Chapter 19 on John Bunyan). (Links to an external site.)http://www.ccel.org/f/foxe/martyrs/home.html

How does he describe Bunyan and his role in English society?

What was the reason Foxe gave for Bunyan’s imprisonment?
