07 Jul Letter to your House member
Your assignment is to write a letter to your member of the House of Representatives (not your a senator). DON’T WORRY, you do not have to mail your letter. You only need to write it and submit it here as a HW assignment.
People usually letters to Congress because they think that government should spend more time dealing with a specific issue — like global warming or national security. If there is not an issue that you care about, here are some suggestions of issues that you may want to write about:
- Taxes too high or too low
- The federal budget how the federal govt. spends its money
- A federal response to local law enforcement issues
- Federal drug laws
- Immigration and border control
- American involvement in foreign conflicts
Your letter MAY NOT deal with an issue that is the business of local government like homelessness, property crime, trash collection, or local taxes. Remember that you are writing a letter to a Federal House Member.
Follow these steps to complete this assignment:
- Find out who your House Member is — this should be easy with a simple Google search.
- Write a properly formatted business letter to that House Member — I suggest that you use a template that is supplied by Microsoft Word or another word processing application. If your letter is not properly formatted, you will miss out on 2 points.
- submit the letter here by copying and pasting it in the submission window — if it loses some of the formatting, don’t stress. Also, the content of your letter should be no longer than 150 words.
- Make sure that your language is formal — remember that you are writing to a House Member.
- Your letter should only deal with one issue.
Again, you don’t have to submit this letter to your actual member of Congress, and you certainly don’t have to include your actual return address. (Feel free to just make one up!)
If you are not sure whether an issue is appropriate for this assignment, make sure to contact me through Canvas message or by email: [email protected]
I will be grading based on the following simple rubric:
- 0-5 points for formatting: The letter formatted as a business letter.
- 0-5 points for correct address: The letter addressed to your actual House Member.
- 0-5 points for subject: The letter is based on an appropriate subject
- 0-5 points for tone of letter: The letter written in a respectful tone
