07 Jul MUSIC INQUIRY
INSTRUCCTIONS
Read the information posted here. Then watchthe demo video posted below. Then you can do the activity.
For our activity, we are going to usemusic! This is a great way to get students thinking aboutculture, history, language, interpretation, events, etc…
Please, oh pretty please, do this in order.Ok? Grab a sheet of paper and jot down your answers. Pretend your sheet ofpaper is my actual worksheet and the following questions are on it. Or,print out the worksheet and write directly on it.
REMEMBER: You are in social studies. Your answers should addresssocial studies.
On your paper, answer question 1:
1) What types of questions can you ask aboutmusic? Be as specific as you can.
Now, look at the lyrics. (With kids, make surethey understand the words. For you, look up any that are unclear.)
On your paper, answer question 2:
2) Now that you have seen the lyrics and theinformation provided at the top of the lyric sheets, what questions would youlike to answer that pertain to social studies (you are preservice teachers -any standard, concept, topic, etc… is fair game here)?
Please watch these videos in order (You mighthave to copy the links into your browser):
#1
#2
(FYI..these are original videos – veryimportant for inquiry.)
On your paper, answer questions 3 and 4:
3) Did you find evidence to answer yourquestions from #2 and if so, what is the evidence? If you have identifiedyour evidence, try to answer your questions.
4) Can you think of any additional questionsyou would like to now have answered?
In this activity, we did a fairly open inquirywith the music. You can, however, narrow it down a bit by asking them toconsider specific clues or specific topics (like pop culture messages). We endthis activity with a question that could then be used to launch into furtherinquiries that are led by student interest.
(We need a happydance emoji!)
Now, everyone make a thread! On your ownthread you MUST address the following:
Discuss the process, what you were thinkingduring it, how you feel about this, or any teacher like thoughts that crossed yourmind while doing it.
Share your questions/answers and yourthoughts.
