According to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), cigarette smoking remains the leading cause of preventable disease, disability, and death in the United States, accounting for more than 480,000 deaths every year, or about 1 in 5 deaths.
There are many different reasons why a person may start to smoke, or decide to keep smoking, so public health anti-smoking messages and commercials need to appeal to many different audiences.
