The common goal of mission accomplishment and soldier welfare is the foundation of the NCO/officer relationship. A successful relationship between these two individuals is paramount to achieving the military’s mission.  The achievement of these goals is accomplished through each individual’s leadership.

Leadership, especially in the context of the NCO/officer relationship, should be viewed as a process where influence and guidance are imparted from one individual or group of individuals to another. Looking at leadership through this lens promotes understanding of the NCO/Officer relationship, as well as allowing every soldier, even the most junior, to understand how they can lead in their own lives and work. Leadership occurs in all directions; soldiers lead down by managing subordinates, lead up through mentorship, lead sideways by providing insight and support to their peers, and lastly lead themselves. The NCO/officer relationship exemplifies this concept, as each individual is both leading and being lead simultaneously, in any given moment. The NCO leads up by offering mentorship and invaluable guidance to new officers, while simultaneously leading down through training and ensuring soldiers are well-equipped to accomplish the military’s mission. Because of their knowledge, experience ,and position, NCO’s are the backbone of the military. They bridge the gap between the enlisted and officer ranks and support a cohesive force unified in mission accomplishment.

A successful NCO/officer relationship occurs through the understanding that both offer different but equally valuable knowledge and skills.  While the hierarchical organization of the military can complicate how this professional relationship is perceived or carried out, it is necessary for soldiers to understand the importance of this relationship to mission success.
