Comparison and Contrast Macbeth and Hamlet Essay

Write a Comparison/Contrast Essay that compares two plays

  • You can select one or more elements on which to compare the plays. Most students select three or more elements and have one body paragraph for each.
  • Review the White Fang movie-vs-book sample outline and essay. Note that it would need to be expanded for this assignment’s requirements, but it’s still a great example of how to organize this type of essay.
  • For guidance from your text, read Chapter 4 pages 87-95, and Chapter 9.

Focus on the plays themselves

  • Write in third person point of view only.
  • This is not a personal response paper, so no “I, me, my” pronouns.
  • Also, no personal experiences or reflections from your life. Focus 100% on what is in the plays.

Paper must include:

  • Introduction Paragraph with a clear thesis statement
  • 2 – 5 Body Paragraphs – each with a clear topic sentence as the first sentence.
  • Conclusion Paragraph.

Note about Topic Sentences of Body Paragraphs:

  • ALL other sentences in a body paragraph must relate to its topic sentence.
  • That means that if your first sentence is about one of the plays, you can’t talk about the other play in that body paragraph!
  • Hint: a topic sentence can focus on what element that body paragraph is focusing on. For example, you could write “The setting was vastly different in these two plays.” Then you could write about both plays in that paragraph (but only about the setting, and showing how it was different).
