This activity addresses module outcomes 3 & 4. Upon completion of this activity, you will be able to:
- Apply a criminological theory to explain the abuse or misuse of drugs.
- Evaluate the role of the criminal justice system in the prevention of the abuse or misuse of drugs.
Consider everything you have learned regarding drugs, our attempts to regulate drugs, and the effects that these attempts have had upon the criminal justice system and special populations (minorities, women, etc.) Using the resources provided in this course and additional academic resources (scholarly journal articles, academic books and monographs, etc.), provide an overview of the attempt to enforce drug laws on the drug of your choice.
In 4-5 pages
- Identify a drug that appears on the Drug Enforcement Administrations schedule of drugs and explain the history of the regulation of that drug.
- Identify the demographic characteristics of those who are most likely to abuse or misuse that drug, and/or to be arrested for misuse of this drug.
- Apply a criminological theory to explain the abuse or misuse of this drug.
- Explain the efforts by the criminal justice system to prevent the abuse or misuse of this drug. Are these efforts sufficient?
- Finally, recommend what you believe ought to be the next steps relevant to the enforcement of that drug.
