Explaining the manifestation of police misconduct or the factors that facilitate such behavior maintains an active and rigorously pursued study in police studies, research that has spanned over a half-century, emerging in the 1950s. However, it was not until the work of Chevigny (1969) that researchers and practitioners started to truly understand the complexity of misconduct. The central premise of this paper is to discuss how does the police subculture come to create and perpetuate police misconduct (recognizing that police misconduct is broad this topic can take multiple paths).
