Topics:

1. Write a review of The Spirit Level in which you assess both the strengths and weaknesses of the argument and the evidence presented in this study of inequality. In your considered opinion, do the strengths outweigh the weaknesses, or do the weaknesses outweigh the strengths? What is your own personal response to the views outlined in this book?
2. Compose the script of a debate between two protagonists: one who believes that inequality is an inescapable, a universal, and a desirable aspect of the human condition; while the other believes that inequality dehumanizes and distorts social relations and destroys the basis of a sustainable society. Try to ensure that each argument is equally represented, and conclude by summarizing your own opinion of this debate. This is your opportunity to become a sociologist. Your paper should be no more than six (6) pages in length double-spaced (not including the bibliography). Dont let the length fool you. This should not be something you whip off the night before. The best papers will probably start out about 7 to 8 pages long, but be edited down to 4 pages of pure gold in the final draft.
